Kauto Star is the winner of two Cheltenham Gold Cups, a record breaking four King Georges, three Betfair Chases and two Tingle Creeks. These highlights form part of a (current) record over fences of sixteen wins from twenty-three races and a total prize money haul of over two million pounds.
Class Performer
Kauto Star is a horse of the highest class. This might seem to be stating the obvious but Paul Nicholls horse does, perhaps, not always get the credit he deserves.
Very few horses have the versatility to win Grade One races at distances between 2 miles and 3 miles 3 furlongs and four wins in the King George wins has only ever been achieved by one other horse; Desert Orchid.

Record Breaker
Another goal is the 2010 Cheltenham Gold Cup. This will be Kauto Stars fourth attempt at the race and after victory in 2007 he found stablemate Denman too good in 2008 but made history as the first horse to regain the Gold Cup when victorious again in 2009.
Jumping The Key To Success
If Kauto Star has an achilles heel it is his jumping with three incompletions so far in his career. It could also be argued that a poor round of jumping in the 2008 Gold Cup contributed to his downfall, although the performance of stablemate Denman that day was spectacular.
Nevertheless, Kauto Star's jumping appears to be improving with age and his last three performances have seen him jump as well as at any time during his career.
Can Kauto Win A Third Gold Cup?
Statistics are against Kauto Star here as Cheltenham Gold Cup winners tend to be at their peak when aged between seven and nine. Kauto will be ten years old by the time the Gold Cup comes round in March and there has only been one winner aged ten or over since 1992 (Cool Dawn 1998).
That said, Kauto Star has already proved statistics are there to be broken and he undoubtedly has by far the strongest claims on form of all the horses currently aiming towards the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
