Supporters of 2009 RSA Chase winner Cooldine will be hoping he follows in the footsteps of the recent winners of that race such as Denman and Looks Like Trouble who have gone on to win the Gold Cup in the following season.

Comparisons With Florida Pearl

Trainer Willie Mullins has voiced concerns that Cooldine may not have the class of his nine-time Grade One winning favourite Florida Pearl.
Perhaps it is a tribute to even be thought of in the same parish as that horse who has won four Irish Hennessys, a King George and two races at the Cheltenham Festival but Cooldine will need to be that classy if he is to dethrone Kauto Star and win the Gold Cup.

How Good Was The 2009 RSA Chase?

Cooldine was certainly an emphatic winner of the RSA Chase in 2009 staying on strongly for a sixteen length victory over Horner Woods. A subsequent defeat at the Punchestown Festival could be seen as a race too far in a hard season but many would argue that the level of his RSA win is several degrees below what will be required if he is to compete at the highest level in his second season over fences. A more positive view of Cooldines RSA win is that it marks him down as head and shoulders above the other novices of last season and he remains the young horse to watch in 2009/10.

Back To Form In Hennessy

After disappointing in the Lexus Chase Cooldine bounced back to form in the Hennessy when just failing to hold off the fast improving Joncol by a quarter of a length.

Willie Mullins was worried that his charge might be short of fitness at Leopardstown so the fact the he came so close to winning the Grade One chase would give hope to his supporters of a big run at Cheltenham.
