The Gold Cup takes place at Cheltenham Racecourse in March of each year and the race is run over a distance of three miles and two and a half furlongs with a total of twenty-two fences jumped throughout the race. The top trainers may all strive to win a Grand National or a Champion Hurdle as well but the highest achievement in the sport is to land the Gold Cup odds at Cheltenham.
How To Bet On The Gold Cup
Most bookmakers offer odds on the Cheltenham Gold Cup many months before the races takes place and some will even start to offer prices for the following years race as soon as the winner has crossed the line.
The easiest way to place a bet is to click on the horse you fancy on this page and follow the instructions to open an account. Choose a bookmaker which you dont already have an account with and you could get a free bet. Check out this site for a full list of free bets.
Gold Cup History
Many great horses have won the Gold Cup since the race was first run over fences in 1924 and since then steeplechasing legends such as Desert Orchid, Burrough Hill Lad and Dawn Run have all won the coveted trophy.
Winning the race once proves illusive to most top class chasers but a small band have won the race on more than one occasion; Cottage Rake, Arkle and Best Mate have all won the race three times but the record of wins in the race goes to Golden Miller who won the race five consecutive times from 1932 to 1936.
Gold Cup Tips
In the last ten years great horses such as Best Mate, Kicking King and War Of Attrition have all landed their Gold Cup odds and big price shocks are fairly rare with the top quality chasers of the year tending to confirm their dominance at Cheltenham.
You may want to follow the powerful yard of Paul Nicholls who has managed to win the Gold Cup four times with See More Business, Denman and Kauto Star (twice). He saddled the first three horses home in the 2008 race and has a very powerful hand again this year.
If you are uncertain what to look for in your Gold Cup selection, make sure that whoever you choose has had experience of winning (or running very well) before at Cheltenham. Winners of the Gold Cup have nearly always had very positive course form. For more cheltenham tips check out our dedicated cheltenham betting site.
If you do come up with an outsider take heart from Nortons Coin in 1990. This 100/1 outsider was trained by sheep farmer Sirrel Griffiths but he showed an amazing improvement in form that day to prove too good for all his rivals including wonder horse Desert Orchid.
So if your fancy is a big price in the gold cup odds dont let that put you off; why not have a bet?
